We had an awesome Awana experience tonight at First Baptist Church in Delta. We met at the church to sign up and the kids got to play together in the very nice, carpeted gym.
Jeff was there and greeted us warmly as usual. He took Duck, Duck, Goose over to the gym where she played until her heart was content and her legs were tired. Jeff is so good with the kids. The natural way he maintains control of large groups and the ease at which he communicates with kids of all ages has always impressed me. The kids love him and it is easy to see why. After a little while, Courtney took over and led the little kids in more games. The kids seem to gravitate to her. Those Durham's are a good team.
I was glad Duck, Duck, Goose got the opportunity to play with kids without my direct involvement. It was amazing to see her playing organized games and following directions. Jeff paired her with an older girl who was to be her "buddy" and that little girl was as sweet and considerate as can be. She took the time to explain the rules of each game on Duck, Duck, Goose’s level, held her hand, and encouraged her throughout the evening. What a great kid she was.
The actual Awanas lessons will begin next week. They meet once a week for 2 hours a night. I think Awanas will turn out to be just what we've been looking for. It is great that Duck, Duck, Goose will get to learn more about God and socialize with other kids. It will be especially nice to have the lessons and activities in the winter.
If you are ever unsure about attending activities or group meetings, my advice is just to go. Just go. Check it out. After you go once or twice, you can always decide it isn’t right for you, but you’ll never know till you try. You are too old for feeling awkward and shy anyway. Get over that, because life is too short to be scared of trying new things.

Way to go! I am so proud of you for having the attitude of just go do it. That is good advice for all of us. Goosy Lucy will adapt if you do. I have heard that Awanas is a good program. I was wondering if they have a program called Moms of Preschoolers aka MOPS as well. God bless you, Sweetie. You are great Mom.

Hayley I love this post. My heart breaks for Laura if she is still unable to view these posts often. She would love to see this. Did Charley name herself in this one? Just curious.
ReplyDeleteThey have have MOPS here Janice. I haven't checked it out yet but I think I probably will. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteThanks Ma. I think Laura was going to try to read it over Labor Day weekend. Phyllis and them were coming over. I haven't heard if they got the chance. No, Charley did not name herself...I am TOTALLY running out of fresh ideas! I knew this day would come.
We got Laura caught up over the holiday. She actually seems like she is very curious about learning more about the computer...so this may be my chance...I am investigating options for her Christmas present this year:-)
ReplyDeleteLaura can come use my computer anytime, but she doesn't seem to want to.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about us all being too dang old to be scared of groups of people. I don't know if I'll ever get over the want-to-crawl-under-a-rock feeling of walking for the first time into room full of people who already know each other, but that feeling passes quickly, and a lot of times, the benefits and rewards are worth the few moments of uncomfortableness. I'm glad you and DDG found some good people to hang out with, especially during winter.
