Chuck and I decided to ring in the new year by staying up way too late watching movies. Not very exciting you say? Well, we enjoyed it. Partying till the break of dawn is something I no longer have any desire to do. And staying up late paid off this time, because around 12:30 I noticed the sky was clear and full of stars and I caught a glimpse of that telltale shade of green just beyond my view from the backdoor. I ran to my boots, but quickly realized shorts and snow boots don't jive. I kicked them off and pulled on snow pants, gloves, a hat, and a coat. Back went the boots, sans socks. I grabbed my camera and shot out the door.
On one side of the world the aurora borealis lit up the dark black sky and on the other, stars hovered overhead, twinkling as bright as I have ever seen them. In the distance firecrackers popped off, one after another. After a few minutes, Chuck joined me and we shared a New Year's kiss underneath it all.
The sight of the northern lights and star lit sky was so unbelievable, I considered waking Black-eyed Pea up, but in the end reason won out and I let her remain snuggled in her warm bed. After I went back in the house, I bid her a Happy New Year while kissing her cheek and she dreamily replied, "Happy New Year" in return.
What about those pictures I produced with the camera I grabbed before going out you say? Well as it turns out, the aurora is a hard thing to photograph. So I got nothin'. None. Nada. I am going to have to do a little research to figure out how to capture it's beauty. Maybe next time.
Happy New Year ya'll!! I'd love to hear about how you spent yours!

Great New Year idea!!
ReplyDeleteWe did the same thing. I Love the show "House" and they were having a "House Marathon" we watched 14 hours straight of "House" and then brought the New Year in drinking fresh squeezed Florida OJ :)
LOL...What Fun!!
Well, I did not get to experience seeing the aurora borealis. We had a very early supper at Chili's. We went to bed pretty early. We had thunder storms all night. Today we ate turnip greens, peas and pork tenderloin. Watched that awesome Crimson Tide football game. Roll Tide Roll!
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year!
Lucky for me, my neighbor was setting off fireworks, and my camera was still on the tripod from our visit to UAF for the fireworks display. I managed to capture the lights and the neighbors fireworks in one photo. Another moment of being someplace at the right time.
ReplyDeleteI hope the lights are out again for you so you can capture them with your camera. Glad you got to enjoy them.
Happy 2011!
Such a sweet post. Sounds like quiet a romantic night. One you'll remember forever. Love the love. Pictures are always great but somehow they're not needed in this one. Love you all.
