So. Eeny Meeny Miny Moe and I wanted to try making frozen ornaments while living in Alaska. Here in Alabama frozen ornaments won't last long. But in Alaska, well, I'd be willing to bet they are still hanging there today. Yeah. We forgot to take them down.
We began by rummaging through our stock of clean tin cans. We selected 6 or 8 various sizes and then looked around Eeny Meeny Miny Moe's toy bin for something fun to freeze. It was there we found pieces from 2 different sets of nativity scenes. We thought it was perfect. Well, I thought it was perfect. Eeny Meeny Miny Moe was reluctant. I'm the Mama, so I won. We filled the tin cans up with nativity figurines, a piece of looped yarn for hanging, and water, then set them outside. In about 10 minutes, (just kiddin')....the following morning (but likely before), they were frozen solid. We brought them inside, ran warm water over the cans, and slid the ice ornaments out. What we found was kinda funny and kinda sacrilegious. Before you view the following images please understand we meant no harm and the time spent was full of quality (and some brief, but heated head butting).
And we weren't the only ones with the idea. The Mason family gave us a little set of ice ornaments for Christmas. I think they made theirs with more natural substances. To me, they looked a lot like bear bait. But, I boldly hung them from the trees, believing with most of my heart, that the bears would not be lulled out of their dens by the faint smell of frozen Kool-aid and cranberries.

So cute. What a great idea.
ReplyDeleteReally "Cool" idea!!
ReplyDeleteYou are so creative :)
Wow, our ice ornaments made it on your blog-now that is exciting :) I always make them out of natural stuff so when you forget to take them down when it finally gets warm you don't have random bits of stuff all over the yard.
ReplyDeleteHope you ladies are doing well!!
Ellie
wonderful and so creative, Your family made memories for the remainer of not mom and dad's lifetime but this will remain with your cute child to tell her chldren, grandchildren and maybe even great grand of thoes times in her family's life,
ReplyDeleteI hope you don't mind my gushing, but here'd goes: Flonnie is right. Not only are your activites creative for your little one, but she will also have the memories of spending time with you through new ways of learning everyday. You have taken on the role of a mother (and your child's first teacher) with such great pride.
ReplyDeleteIn the world of online networking, cell phones, blackberry's and laptops that evolve constantly, you have stripped the hectic world of the
21st century back to basics and have given Charley the simple world of childhood, wonder, imagination and creativity that every kid deserves. She will look back on all of it with admiration, including your adventure to Alaska. You're a wonderful mom.
Katie you have put into words my feelings about the awesome mother that Hayley has been to Charley. She and Chuck have sacrificed what most call necessities in order for Charley to have that simple world of wonder, imagination and creativity that every kid deserves. How many of us could survive without a TV in Alaska to name just one? I can't tell you how many times Hayley has stood firm against introducing technology to Charley. I thought many times that she was being extreme but if you could see the constant smiles and happiness in this child's face you would know that at age 5 she has already received the most important gift and lessons to be had in life. This great gift makes her one lucky little girl is more important than a college education. That is the gift of love.
ReplyDeleteI know Ellie! You are practically famous now right??? Just kidding of course.
ReplyDeleteThanks Flonnie. That is really nice to hear. I hope so.
Gush away Katie, gush away! Thank you, thank you. I am so flattered.
Thanks Mom. We HAVE sacrificed. I don't always see it that way though, so it is nice to hear it. Living without certain things (cable, fancy cell phones, cars beyond made after the year 2000) makes us stand out sometimes and not always in a good way. But it is all so that we can give her time. Time to raise her up right. And I'd do it again. All of it.
Well, I'm just going to go ahead and second (and third) what Katie and Mom said... Without putting into my own words, of course (cuz we don't want this blog to be TOO mushy), but you ARE a great mom. Hope I can do as well whenever I decide to have one (or a couple) of my own.
ReplyDeleteThanks sister. You will. Just do it.
