When Saint Patrick's Day was approaching, I was not at all enthusiastic about celebrating. I had even decided to keep the holiday on the down low and skip it all together, but then, I noticed where the MOMS Club was hosting a craft's day event with a St. Patrick's Day theme. I thought, "Hey this will be easy. We will go. It will fulfill my motherly, celebrate-every-holiday duties and I'll be off the hook."
A little book and a short history lesson
Crafts
3 of them
I thought, "We'll wear green"
I'm a leprechaun.
'Cause this is the face that all leprechauns make.
All the time.
Didn't you know?
And hunt 4 leaf clovers
And find 3 leaf clovers
And call it a day
BUT Nooooo!
I had to go a read my friend Becca's blog and get all inspired.
The holiday continues...
Paint a box for the leprechauns
You see, legend has it, that if you decorate a box and leave it out in the yard the St. Patrick's Eve, the leprechauns will find it and fill it with treasure. Then, they hide it! If you can find it before nightfall the following day, then you get to keep the treasure.
No green paint for the special day o' green?
Then it's time for a refresher course in what blue and yellow make of course!
Oh and also, no paint brush? Use a plastic knife and your fingers.
Next up, spend the following hour scrubbing the paint from child's body.
Answer 400,000 questions about why the leprechauns want to hide the box.
Do they want us to find the box?
Do they want to keep the treasure for themselves?
Are they mean?
Will they be mad if we find it?
Will we find it?
What if we can't find the box?
Write some of these questions inside the box so that the leprechauns can answer them.
Leave the leprechauns a treat
Put a note on it so they know we aren't one of those families they try to capture them.
Maybe next year.
Realize that the leprechauns cannot leave goodies in the box, outside, in the heat of a spring night, with the ants.
The following morning (and after a late night for one leprechaun in particular), we realized that the leprechauns had revised their plan. After we found the box shoved deep in the bushes, we discovered a note that led us all over the yard and house in search of other notes and ultimately, treasures.
In the magnolia
In the lamp post
Under the vines (also known as the arch like a rainbow, the color of the leprechauns gold)
In the statue's pot
In a drawer
In the refrigerator
Under the bed wrapped with Granna's scarf
They caused all sorts of mischief.
Like leaving their initials on the front porch.
They used our hand towel to fashion a shaw for the statue. I know. Thoughtful, right?
And they rolled our bedroom with toilet paper and rearranged the stuffed animals.
And wore me out.
It was a good holiday.

Oh My!!
ReplyDeleteWhat an Adventure you had!!!!
Hayley, you should of been an elementary teacher - you have lots of cute ideas that kids would enjoy doing!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great adventure! I agree that you'd make a great elementary school teacher! My favorite question was: "Do you wear your hats to sleep? YES/NO"
ReplyDeleteAwwwww.
OH. MY. GOSH. I'm speechless. This is a super involved St. Patrick's Day. This was an... extravaganza deluxe SUPREME St. Patrick's Day. Wow. I love the way you wrote this entry.. With the stuff you were gonna do first, but then NO! So much more to come after those first few activities! It reads like a story with really funny parts all through it. I bet she had such a good day--well it turned into a two day affair, didn't it? Cute pics of her covered in paint, too. My favorite part was reading the questions inside the box. SO funny. Oh yeah, and the part "Put a note on it so they know we aren't one of those families they try to capture them"... Katie is right.. You would make a really great elementary school teacher. Or just have more babies... maybe...?
ReplyDeleteNow you should give credit where credit is due. I suggested "tell her to go outside and find a four leaf clover" and "wear green". LOL. You obviously did not got your creativity from me did you?
ReplyDeletewhat a hoot! the questions were priceless and i love that you let the leprechauns answer them! Charlie and i must hang out soon!
ReplyDeleteand thanks for the shout out ;)
Dang Hayley! Great job on the holiday fun - I'm gonna tell Big Mama to put you in charge of our Easter fun!!!
ReplyDeleteI agree - you should be a teacher! I have thought that forever. You are very creative and a wonderful pretender:-)
Hayley wins the Mother of the Year award as all the other contenders are busy marveling at your creativity. You are so amazing. You lil' leprachan lover is a lucky lil' girl!
ReplyDeleteThanks Connie and Miz Liz. I never thought teaching suited me. You see the problem is, I don't really like children. No. Just kidding. Totally. Just feel that way just a smidgen of the time. Just a SMALL percentage really.
ReplyDeleteKatie, see above. And thanks.
Thanks Sunny. Yes it was a 2 day affair. Maybe more babies. I'd choose that over school teacher. Though, that seems crazy having written it just now.
Yes, MOM totally told me to wear green and go look for 4 leaf clovers. That's all Mom. Credit given.
Thanks Becca. She loved it and took it very seriously.
Phyllis, NO! Don't tell Big Mama that! I don't have the cash for the golden egg!
Thanks Nica but you wouldn't have thought that if you'd seen me blowing my top in town today. I. lost. it. "Don't touch that" is just effective lately.
Nica, is just NOT effective lately. That's what I meant to say.
ReplyDeleteWow! What fun St. Patrick's Day activities!! You are definitely on COOL mom!! Thanks for sharing at oopsey daisy!
