Front Yard Halloween Decorations
I got a STEAL of a deal one summer at an Alabama yard sale on all those tombstones (and some other good Halloween stuff). I had a heck of a time fitting them all in the car for the trip back to VA.
Funny thing is, I've always felt kind of weird about having tombstone decorations for Halloween. I mean it ain't really right, is it? What are we trying to get at here? BUT, the deal was great, like I said, and my baby wanted some more Halloween decorations. Decorating is one of her very favorite things to do. So, we called it a monster graveyard.
Monsters gotta rest too right? And that IS scary.
We have this stupid metal pole in our front yard. I don't know why our landlord leaves it up. But we thought we'd put it to use holding up this scary grave tender. He had pretty realistic eyes.
I think it was our best dummy yet.

Happy girl with her pumpkin family.
She called one small pumpkin the "Miracle Child" while holding it to the sky and singing it's name.
She's a fun little weirdo.

The first trial run on the ears was a literal flop.
And really what's the point anyway? Like she's going to wear them for longer than 2 seconds.
But I improved them anyway.
Couldn't help myself
I used interfacing and felt.
This is the thanks I get.
How dare you make mouse ears for me MOTHER!!
Devastation
I picked up this Mickey Mouse suit at a thrift store for less than $3.00 not because she loves Mickey so much, but because I wanted to see her in this little stuffed thing.
And she really likes to talk about mice.
I really put some effort into Charley's costume. It was work man. She wanted to be Swedish. I sewed up a skirt FROM SCRATCH for the first time ever. I had mom on the phone for guidance. I don't even remember how I did it. I know at least one attempt got trashed. I sewed this little fringe around the bottom that I've had forever and even used on a little Indian costume Charley wore when she was about 4. Then, we found the most perfect shirt already in existence AND in her closet. I sewed it to the skirt, like three times because I kept making it too short. Then I washed it and found that the fringe was too heavy and the shirt pulled away from the skirt in the washing machine. I fixed it AGAIN and told Charley to NEVER get it dirty.
Amazingly, we already had the apron.
I bought her little clogs at a thrift store. The shoes cost more than the whole get up!
I mean they were only like 5 dollars but still.
Chucky boy had the bright idea to be Rocky Balboa. Was it you honey or was it me?
I think it might have been me.
Really. WHO WAS IT?
Well I know for sure it was me who painted this "Rocky" shirt, that no one on earth saw because he had his jacket zipped up all night. In his defense it was terribly cold.
Charley had to hide behind a bush and put on a pair of leggings.
Painting the shirt was a last minute deal...so much so that when he took it off he had paint on his chest. Hahahaha. That makes me laugh.
He's wearing Charley's fingerless wonder girl gloves turned inside outside. (snicker, snicker)
Chuck used up all my red food coloring turning a white headband pink.
I told him it wouldn't work.
Also I spent A LOT of time searching for those classic red boxing shorts in thrift stores, found him something similar, and then he just wore my jogging pants.
The thanks I get (shakes head side to side).
Chuck really loves Rocky so he insisted we have a little photo sesh.
I got some mad stage-makeup-class-in-college skills.
And we all know Chuck is an excellent actor. AW MY EYE.
He's ok! Shew
And I of course had to go as Adrian. I took an old thrift store sweater and fashioned it into a classic Adrian hat. I mixed some duct tape and a black sharpie marker with some of Charley's broken glasses to make my own horned rimmed version.
The wig was used for Mavis (Hotel Transylvania) for Charley's costume a while back.
One big, happy, mismatched, Halloween family.

Love these costumes - and particularly relate to how much time and effort you put in them! My boys (Jones & Freddie) were Hoss & "Little Jones" Cartwright (from "Bonanza") this past year, and I was scouring eBay in the summer to get the perfect pieces for their costumes. The previous year (before Freddie was born), Jones dressed like "GI Jones," because he was an army crawler. I seek way more validation out of creating their costumes than I probably should, but hey. It's the little things, right?!:) Then, when people aren't as BLOWN AWAY by the clever plays-on-names as I am, I feel a mixture of both disappointment and the urge to get more clever and discriminating friends :)
ReplyDeleteAll that to say, I love these Halloween pictures, because it makes me think you feel sorta the same way I do about creating costumes. We are a rare breed :)
What a cute idea! Hoss and Little Jones! Precious. Yes, a rare breed indeed.
DeleteWOW this is amazing, sister. Great great great costume making, photography, and black eye makeup-ing. We should produce a giant haunted house together.
