Rocks in My Pocket

After arriving home from the Delta Fair one night in August, I began the routine of readying Huckleberry Pie for bed. In the process, I emptied her pockets. It was there that I found an astonishing number of rocks and miscellaneous other items. I don't even know how she kept her pants from falling down from the weight of it all.

It was then that I realized that Huckleberry Pie's rock collection was out of control. She loves rocks. Loves them. Because I love her, I cannot bear to throw any back. Even when she's not looking. In fact, I packed and shipped a shameful amount of her rocks from Alabama to Alaska. Ok, so I love rocks too. I understand what she sees in them because I see it too.

We've got rocks in a plate by the T.V., painted rocks on the window sill, rocks in a tin outside, and rocks in various different treasure boxes in her room.

And since one should not mix Alabama rocks with Alaska rocks (my quirk, not hers) and because our cabin's rock holding capacity had been reached, I came up with a solution.

It was time for a rock garden. Now, you'd be terribly wrong (and a little bit rude) if you were to assume that a rock garden is simply a pile of rocks in some random spot in the yard. Huckleberry Pie's rocks were artfully arranged with a great deal of consideration and effort. The spot where they are showcased was chosen only after much deliberation.

An unrelated side note: This us what I was wearing while Huckleberry Pie was arranging her rock garden. She said I looked like a "real Alaskan".

How absolutely precious of you both. The simple life is good for my girls. My Huckleberry Pie looks cute as a button with her lipstick, red Dorothy shoes and her rock garden. Let's hope her obsession doesn't turn into diamonds when she grows up. Love the galoshes. Got some myself today. See you tomorrow Potatoe Bug. :)

Hello Miz Liz and thank you for reading! Isn't it nice when people care enough to read your blog? I am going to check yours out right now. See you over there soon!

Thanks Phyllis. My Friend is very well suited for the weather (the wool-ey booger) and that makes him happy.

Love this, & can totally relate to it, as well. MagPie used to bring me a rock every day to let me know she thought about me at school...but then she started bringing me TONS of rocks & I had to break it to her that one per day was enough. We have a decorative box-full (for now), but I do like your idea of a rock garden.

(And we don't mix our rocks, either. They're segregated by state.)

Just spotted your blog on Miz Liz's. I've known Liz for a few years now. We've never met in person but correspond through email and the Fairbanks Newsminer. I also have been checking out Susan Stevenson blog for at least two years. In the process of getting my third calendar from her. I'm a military wife and we lived in Fairbanks from 7/04 to 7/07. We still have a house there and plan to move back in 2013. We are currently living in Northport, Alabama. I love reading blogs especially about Alaska. I'll be adding you to my daily list. Awwwww. Your little one looks so cute in her red shoes. :) The rock garden is a great idea! (I remember I collected things as a little kid...wasn't rocks though. I would take crab apples, put them in baskets, and think everyone would eat them. Mom would quickly throw them out when I wasn't looking. hahahaha.)

Tina. Shew. Glad keeping rocks segregated isn't just something I do. I mean, HOW could someone mix their rocks?!?!

Hey Tammy. Sounds like we have a lot in common. From Alabama to Alaska. Can't wait to hear about how your big move goes. Glad to have you reading!

Ok, Katie. I would totally throw out crab apples too. I mean you couldn't exactly keep a plate of rotten crab apples on display right? Rocks don't spoil.

Right. ;) (It gets weirder. I actually pretended one was a "pet" and I kept it in a basket that was his "cage". After Mom found that one, she got me a hampster. ;)

Welll, will it help you to learn that on our last grocery trip Charley rode in the buggy and named several of the food products I put in there? We had some Parmesan cheese named Pete in the fridge for a while. Hmmmm.....haven't seen him in a while. Maybe I need to see where Pete has run off to.

Pete got mold on 'im. Dats what happened to Pete. Hi, everyone. I'm Hayley's feral sister.
Um, I like rocks, too. I bet you're glad to hear that, sister. It helps cuz if I like 'em, then you know you must not be crazy. Right??

I'll take it one step further to say, if you are the yard stick for crazy measurements, we are going to need another yard stick or two. Wait. Was that follow-able?
