How To Sew a Scarf from a Freepiled Sweater
#1 Cut three strips out of the main body of the sweater. The three strips you see here have matching backsides as well. I was just going to use the sleeves, but I found that they were too short.
#2 Zig zag stitch around all 6 pieces . Here's where a serger would come in handy. Obviously, I don't have one, but I have had the pleasure of using one before. Them things are handy! But zig zaggin' is kinda fun. This part is really important too. Without it, your scarf is going to come unraveled. AND quick.
#3 After your done, just straight stitch all the pieces together. I didn't get any pictures of that. So if you are serious about making one...sorry. I am new to tutorial making. Sue me.
I arranged it all so the finished hem that was formally the bottom of the sweater would be the new tail ends of the scarf. But, no matter how hard tried to see my scarf as a scarf, I could only see it as a sleeve (EVEN THOUGH IT TOTALLY WASN'T!!!), on account of those finished ends.
So I cut them up. This was not a good idea. The scarf looked like something Raggedy Ann would wear on an off day. They "unraveled. AND quick." (quoting myself from earlier, in case you didn't get it). They also just plain broke off.
So I thought long and hard about what to do about those raggedy ends. Then I searched high and low, and found some green yarn at the gift shop beside the IGA (grocery store). I used that yarn to finish the ends. Now, if I remembered anything my Nanny taught me, I coulda made some fringes or something, but I don't, so it ended it with a basic yarn hem.
I'll say this. When I was done, it looked real handmade.
Handmade with care....and thoughtfulness and stuff.
I love this. I don't even know where I'd begin before becoming frusterated though. ;) Then again, being crafty isn't my strong point.
ReplyDeleteLooks like you did a great job Hayley! I have so many projects like that I need to work on...I am inspired to work on them after reading this, but there's no time...ugh...Christams is going to be here soon, kids are going to be out of school, ugh, and I realize that you probably did all of this with Rose Dust sitting right there beside you or maybe even helping you, but for some reason I have an EXTREMELY hard time doing any type of project like this with Joseph or Jordan (or even Guy) hanging around...you may be wondering why Joseph or Guy are trouble, well, they are way to analytical about anything I may do, like why wouldn't you do this, or why are you doing that, which sometimes can be good, but most of the time it is just plain annoying:-) The scarf looks very pretty - and hand made!
ReplyDeleteIt was adorable, and Jamie loved it! Priceless idea for those of us who aren't crafty enough to knit the whole sweater! :)
ReplyDeleteVery pretty. You'd make Nanny proud.
ReplyDeleteVery Creative and Beautiful :)
ReplyDeletewow! you must have made an A in HE.
ReplyDeleteThat is REAL cute, sister! I'm proud of you. I have always wanted to cut up a sweater and make something else out of it, but the "unraveling" thing always has deterred me.. but I guess it IS possible to make something cool out of a sweater. Is it warm? Whoever Jamie is, does she think it's warm? If she hasn't received it yet, WILL she think it's warm? I don't know. Why are you asking me to tell you the future.
ReplyDeleteHey, PS, Ethan has been knitting me a scarf intermittently since 2007. It's still not long enough. In his defense, he has already knitted me 2 hats and another scarf in the past. They are super cute. He is a very good knitter. Do you want him to teach you? It's not too difficult just to do a basic um... what do you call it.. purl or whatever... as in a scarf or something simple. I think you should let him teach ya. He likes teaching people stuff. Thanks for doing that for me, sister. C ya.
Thanks ya'll!! Glad you like it.
ReplyDeletePhyllis, for the record, Charley was asleep. AND I did it a couple of weeks ago...BEFORE the onset of Christmas. Chuck never believes in my projects either. He would deny this, cause it sounds so awful when I write it, but it is true.
Ma, You really think so? I hope so.
Also, Celeste, never had home-ec.
Har har. I was too cool.
Sister, yes it was warm. Almost in a, "I can't breath when I am wearing it" kinda way. It was wool, after all. Wonder if Ethan could teach me via video-cam. For some reason, I cannot see him getting into that. Plus, everything would be all reversed...well if he could just sit with his back facing the camera so I could see over his shoulder...think he would mind doing that? Surely not.
He said that "yes" he would teach you. Are you ready with the Skype? We are sittin here ready ta go.
ReplyDeleteThank you! Now I have a desire to go back to those wool scarf I passed by on the clearance rack at the Super Target yesterday!
ReplyDeleteThanks
