Chums

Ain't friendship grand?

Charley's got it all figured out.

My hope is that she'll find a life-long friend....
a friend that she can laugh with...
lounge with...
be at ease with.

Living in Alaska helped Chuck and I see the value in friendships.
There it was easy.
We had the kind of friends who do favors for you and expected nothing in return.
People seemed to need one another.
And they didn't just need their plumbing skills, brawn, or mechanical know how.
They needed their companionship.
Most folks in Alaska were transplants, which in most cases, meant their families were 1,000's of miles away.
It wasn't a hassle to make time for each other, because you wanted to, needed to.
Friends invited us over for dinner.
We invited friends over for dinner.
The kids stayed up late and played with one another, while the grownups talked and laughed.
It didn't matter that we didn't own a couch or a dining room table.
The Jones' don't even exist in Alaska.
In Alaska, people don't feel the need to pretend to be something they aren't.
They just are what they are.
So you get to skip all that uncomfortable, unnatural stuff.
It was simple.

During my last 5 month jaunt in Alabama,
I made a few like-minded friends, but sadly, left them behind.
I've grown accustomed to long distance relationships with my best friends...
Ma, Sister, and Sister-in-Law.
But I do long for that friend I could call up to hit some Saturday morning yard sales, or to help me hang curtains, or dinner party with....
But we're still new and there's still plenty of opportunity
to get out there and make connections.

We'll have to follow Charley's lead.

Yes it's the simple thing that make, develop and keep a friendship. It's great to see Charley with her friends. Miss you too.

I know exactly what you mean Hayley! Alaska was amazing in that respect (not to mention all the beauty there). Even with my being (and apparently staying) back in AL, I have yet to find a pal like that...so poor Eric has to go do the yard sale/thrift store thing with me, not always a fun thing. Where are the gal pals??
Charley's hair looks so good on her, seems to suit her very well!

I hope you make some really great friends soon, Sister. You deserve 'em as much as Charley does. You will, you will. You, Ma, and Dad will always be my BEST friends, though; you got that right.
