When the Georgia In-Laws were planning their visit to Alabama, I emailed my sister-in-law, Phyllis to suggest we carve out a little time for ourselves during their stay. My grand idea was to pack a few snacks and some water, and set out down the road. I thought it would be fun to just go, and see where we ended up. We could call for a ride back home when we were ready. I knew when her normally timely response was delayed until the next morning, she didn't like the idea. When she and the family arrived in Alabama, she was equipped with a Pinhoti Trail map. Apparently my "go and let's see where we end up" idea did not sit well with the her or the husband. Another time maybe? With a willing partner? Chuck? Wanna go sometime? Anyway, Phyllis is actually an experienced hiker and the Pinhoti Trail was a great idea. We had a lot of fun on our hike. It was awesome to take advantage of one of the outdoor recreational opportunities Alabama offers. Guy Guy (Alfalfa's Uncle) agreed to care for her and his own child while we tried to burn some calories hiking Pinhoti Trail.
The Pinhoti Trail is a 240 mile trail stretching Alabama's Appalachian Mountains into Northwest Georgia.
We elected to go straight ahead.
Doesn't give you a fresh, woodsy hike kinda feeling does it?
A message for the offenders:
Come on people! Stop dumping your garbage in the woods! What kinda lazy bums are you? Besides, isn't it more work to load garbage from your house and sneak it to the woods in the dead of night so that you don't get slapped with a whopping fine? Dang, burn it in your backyard or something.
Think I cured them? Yeah. They won't be dumping anymore garbage after a quick berating from me, right??
I feel just like Julia Sugarbaker from Designing Women. Powerful. Smart.
Thankfully this pile of refuse was not a reoccurring theme of our hike.
After a brief run in with dead kudzu...
My Pappy believed kudzu was going to take over the world.
I think that idea would make a great movie.
The trail opened up...
The trail is heavily wooded and meanders over rolling hills and alongside rocky creek beds.
The trail crisscrossed over the creek at a couple of points.
Pinhoti is the Creek Indian name for turkey home.
Unfortunately, we did not run into any turkeys during our hike.
We. Are awesome. Yes. We-e are awesome.
(A cheer for us)
We didn't go as far as we would have liked but that was only because we felt the supernatural pull of our children (and of Guy Guy who we figured had enough).
Maybe next time we'll go farther.

Litterers are the lowest of the low! I detest folks who dump their garbage in our beautiful outdoors!
ReplyDeleteLove the photos. Reminds me a lot of our favorite hiking trail in GA: Amicalola Falls Trail. Beautiful woods, waterfall views, and communing with nature with my family.
Enjoy your great outdoors as we wait for snow to melt. :)
Very good blog about our little adventure! I do want to take one moment to defend myself for not being adventurous enough to strike off and not have a plan :-) The night that I got your email about 'walking off and seeing where we end up', Guy & I were watching a show about the couple that said 'let's just drive and see where we end up' and I think you know what happened to them (I told you about the show, right?)...hmmm...well, it is better to have a plan I guess, especially since Guy was in charge of our precious little kids.
ReplyDeleteOh, and I meant to comment on that snake photo about you and your Mrs. Adventurous self. I still can't believe you tried to get me to go out on a kayak on the river AT NIGHT. At least you can see the dang snakes in the daytime!
Looks like you had Fun!! maybe next time you will be able to go further :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful trail! (I know we have one somewhere that goes down the Deleware River and you end up in PA or something, but it doesn't look like this.
ReplyDeleteI gotta agree with your sister in law about the "let's see where we end up thing." Wayyyyyy too much Dateline in my life I guess. Anyhow, the trail looks amazing, and I'm envious of your warm walk and sleeveless dress. I gotta say, you look like your daughter in the last photo. Enjoy more warmness in Alabama! :)
Thanks Susan. Hope you find the grass again soon. I know you must miss it.
ReplyDeletePHYLLIS!! You ARE SO adventurous! You hiked the Pinhoti trail! I just have a little crazy mixed into my adventurous side. As you know, that is not always a good thing. And by the way, those "I Shouldn't Have Survived" shows will screw me up for months!! Remember that time I watched that show about the little kid being stolen from the tent? Crippling anxiety. That's why I try not to watch them.
Yeah, Miz Liz, One day I'd like to go all the way to GA! What do ya think Phyllis?
Katie, Don't you know I am loving the weather here! I don't miss the extremely cold temperatures in the least.
One day, you decide to hike and "see where we end up", and the next, you're living on the streets of Tijuana selling Mexican wrestling masks. You see? Not worth the risk.
ReplyDeleteI want to hike this Pinhotel trail. Are there 4 or 5 star restaurants there? Which one? Hope they have a hot tub!
No, you see sister, it's the pinHOTI tra...oh. nevermind.
