Timberneck Farm

A couple of weekends ago we took a trip to tour a farm in Gloucester, Virginia.

We were pretty confused about the whole thing,
and just wondered around aimlessly taking in the views.

There were about three sheep in a 10 X 10 fence,
some honeybee homes on a nice man's tailgate, and a big tractor set up like a showpiece.

A man handed us a phamplet that detailed the history of the place,
but for the life of me I couldn't muster up the interest to read it.

But it was nice to get out, on someone else's property, without fear of meeting the end of a shotgun.

I used the opportunity to try out my new Canon 50mm lens.

I like it pretty well, I suppose.

I guess I got my hopes up thinking there'd be some
miracle improvement in my photographs, but no such luck.

Don't get me wrong, I like my photos, and I swear I'm not fishing,
I guess I'm just kinda bored with them.

I'm a little hard on myself....always comparing myself to others.

But what I'm learning is that oftentimes a big difference, lies in a little thing called Photoshop.

I'm a bit of a purist I suppose. It probably has something to do with learning to shoot in the days of film.
Not that I won't sharpen a photo, or put a cool effect on one now and again.
But Photoshop always seemed a little like tracing to me.
Like cheating.
But now I know better.
Well, I'm at least trying get with the times.

I'd been determined to learn the ropes of Adobe Lightroom
but my laptop died the day after I signed up for the free trial.

I've long feared that plastic surgery will become like Photoshop is to photos;
you gotta get it just to even blend in.
And I've got these spider veins on my ankles and sun damage on my forehead....
alas, that's another topic entirely.

I've always been determined to shoot each and every photo on the manual mode,
even if it means I have to shoot one subject dozens of times to get it just right.

I'm always thinking, if only someone would teach me these programs, if only I had better equipment (this one is real), if only I had a partner, if only there weren't so much competition, if only I didn't have to pay a babysitter half of my earnings to watch my children....
then I could do great things in photography.

But what it so obviously boils down to, is fear.
I guess I lack the confidence to go out on my own.
We only live once though, (here on earth), right?

ugggg
I don't know why I am rambling on about it so, out here in front of God and everybody.

I just felt compelled to spew my thoughts all over you, I suppose.
hmmmmmmmm
What to do, what to do...

Well it looks like ole Powell Burwell Catlett only lived to be 40 years old. You should probably make a decision.

You are a great photographer and have just as much if not more potential than anybody else. The only difference between you and an established photographer is that they didn't pause long enough to let those negative thoughts creep in. Whenever a thought comes in, start on a photography action that you enjoy. You have to live in the moment and ENJOY the learning process instead of always wishing you were further along in it. There are plenty of people who aren't even close to where you are. It's all relative. Don't think. Just do.

PS Although I'm not sure I could handle the break-neck pace of this fabulous farm tour, your photos of it are beautiful.

Hayley, I loved reading this post. I am going to send you an eBook on Lightroom and a recording of my class. It takes an hour to listen to/watch. It will change your mind on editing ;).

I happened upon your page, after visiting the Timber Neck house last weekend. THANK YOU for sharing those pictures - because mine don't even compare to what you captured. And the house really hasn't changed much. I pray after 8.5 years you've learned to appreciate your God-given talents, and never gave up on learning new technology!
